Which Pest Control Measures Prevent Commercial Termite Infestations?

Commercial premises can be severely undermined by the presence of termites. Although these insects are native to large parts of the outback in Australia where they go unnoticed, in suburban settings they can create thousands of dollars of damage to light industrial units, office blocks and workshops.

Of course, seeking commercial pest control help from professionals is always advisable if you see these creatures, or their nests, anywhere on your property. Left unchecked, their colony sizes can soon get out of control and that makes them much harder for experts to deal with. Therefore, early commercial pest control interventions are preferable and this may mean taking action even before they are present. What can you do to protect your business from termites?

Spray Pesticides Under the Soil

Numerous insecticides will kill termites. It is best to opt for the most targeted termiticides, however, since this will mean you are less likely to cause harm to other types of insects, such as bees, for instance. The ideal way to protect business premises which have an outdoor area is to spray the termiticide into a shallow trench around the edge of the property which you subsequently fill in. This method creates an invisible barrier that kills termites which cross it. Filling the trench in helps to preserve the longevity of the treatment. If you don't have an outdoor area to use a sprayed termiticide, then you can opt for indoor, powdered treatments instead.

Repair Damaged Concrete

One of the ways that termites will cause damage to buildings is to start crawling into cracked or disintegrating sections of concrete, thereby causing further damage. Cracks might be found in your foundation, your walls or even your car park. Patch these up with new concrete or apply a resin coating over the top to prevent termites from boring their way in and undermining your building's structural integrity.

Keep Woodwork in Good Repair

Some species of termite like to live inside timber. If the wood is new and treated, then it is much less likely to appeal to them. Consequently, older timber should be varnished or weatherproofed. Just a fresh coat of paint is often enough to keep them at bay. Rotting piles of wood outside should be removed since these are a food source to many subterranean termite species. If you notice little boreholes in your timbers, then this could be a sign of drywood termites so seek the guidance of a commercial pest control expert about what to do next.
